Dem Congressman Defends CDC Director: ‘He’s a Problem Solver’ | CNS News

( - Rep. Gene Green (D-Texas), speaking to C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal” Thursday, said he does not think Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Tom Frieden should be fired, despite calls from some of his Republican colleagues to do so, because Frieden is “a problem solver.”

“I think Tom’s done a good job. I’ve worked with him. I’ve been on the Health Subcommittee since 1997, and I’ve seen a lot of appointed officials come and go. I think he’s serious. I think he’s also a problem solver, and that’s what we need in this job,” said Green, a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

The House Energy and Commerce subcommittee plans to hold a hearing Thursday afternoon on the U.S. response to the Ebola outbreak.

Two Republican congressmen have called for Frieden’s resignation after news that a second nurse from the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital who treated Liberian Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan was allowed to fly on a commercial airplane soon after Duncan’s death.

At a press conference Wednesday, Frieden admitted that Amber Vinson, the second nurse to contract the virus and was being self-monitoring, should not have flown to Ohio. CDC spokesman David Daigle said Vinson was cleared to board the Frontier Airlines flight back to the Dallas area despite having a temperature of 99.5 degrees, because it was below the threshold set by the CDC and she did not have symptoms.

In a statement on his congressional website, Rep. Tom Marino (R-Pa.) called the Ebola response “yet another failure in leadership.”

“The reports my colleagues and I have received are utterly unacceptable and the information provided to the public has been cryptic and in some cases misleading. This has provided a false sense of security to many of our citizens,” Marino said. “That is exactly the opposite of the CDC Director’s primary responsibilities – to communicate clearly and honestly.”

“I have no ill will towards him personally but he should resign his position effective immediately,” Marino added. He also called on the president to “get this right” and “appoint a serious-minded, non-partisan professional who possesses unquestionable credentials and understands that job number one is protecting American citizens.”

“This person should be expressly in charge of handling Ebola containment and treatment activities until a greater degree of certainty is obtained,” Marino said. He called for “strict commercial and personal travel bans to countries affected in West Africa.”

Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) told the Laura Ingraham show Wednesday that Frieden should be fired.
